On memory trail: two days of sustainable cycle tourism in Lombardy Combining nature, history and hospitality in a single experience on two wheels: this is the objective of the tour “On the trail of memory”, a two-day e-bike route organized by the Lombardy Region with the technical support of ERSAF Lombardia and conceived by bike4bliss with the coordination of Giovanni Martinelli and the collaboration of various operators of the Varese DoYouBike project. The initiative made it possible to enhance the Varese area and its network of companies linked to sustainable tourism, offering participants an authentic experience in the heart of Lombardy. From Lake Maggiore to Lake Lugano: cycling among villas, trenches and nature The first day of the tour took cycle tourists from Lake Maggiore to Lake Lugano, on an itinerary that combines scenic charm and historical memory. After the e-bike departure, thanks to the support of A Ruota Libera for rental, the first stop was Villa Della Porta Bozzolo, an elegant eighteenth-century residence surrounded by gardens and hills. The ride continued to the trenches of Cassano Valcuvia, an important historical site linked to the Cadorna Line, and then reached the imposing Orrido di Cunardo, a natural canyon carved by water that represents one of the naturalistic jewels of the area. The Varese Bike Guides accompanied the group all along the route, sharing curiosities, anecdotes and historical details, making the experience even richer and more engaging. The day ended in Lavena Ponte Tresa, where the Yachting Residence welcomed participants in a bike-friendly environment overlooking the lake. Dinner at the Il Carde Restaurant offered a moment of conviviality and discovery of the typical flavors of the Varese area. Monte Piambello, Badia di Ganna and Maglio di Ghirla: between spirituality and tradition The second day was dedicated to the discovery of mountain areas and historical memory. The ascent to Monte Piambello, along the ancient military roads, has allowed you to enjoy breathtaking views of the lakes and mountains of Lombardy. During the descent, two unmissable stops: the Badia di Ganna, a place of spirituality and Romanesque art surrounded by greenery, and the Maglio di Ghirla, an ancient factory still functioning, living testimony to the artisan know-how of Valganna. A model of experiential and sustainable tourism “On the trail of memory” represents a concrete example of cycle tourism in Lombardy based on collaboration between local operators and institutions. From gentle mobility to hospitality, from food and wine to culture, each stop of the tour told of a territory that opens up to the visitor in an authentic and responsible way. An experience that invites you to rediscover the province of Varese by pedaling between nature, history and local communities — because memory, here, is experienced with every turn of the wheel.
